Devotions for The Head, the Heart, and the Home
Matthew 5:14-16
Read: John 9:5 records Jesus’ words, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Jesus’ physical presence left when He
ascended to His Father in Acts 1, however the Light of Christ is still here today. Jesus tells us that those of us who are saved and
following Him by faith are now “the light of the world.” God has saved us from darkness and now has made us to be a light for His
glory in the dark world around us. As we see Jesus’ words there are a few things that we must be in order to do what Jesus has
commanded us in this passage. (1) Depending: We must see that we are not the source of light our life, rather we depend upon Jesus. As we trust in the light of His word He allows us to be like the moon and reflect another’s light. We are to now reflect the Son who is the Light. (2) Dedicating: This is calling us to live our lives in the light, by the light, and for the Light. Our life is now one dedicated to walking in purity and holiness. As we do so we fulfill God’s will and submit to His work in our life. (3) Demonstrating: Our lives are now to be
unashamedly lived on display for the glory of God and the gospel of Christ. Our “good works” are not to demonstrate our goodness but the goodness of God found in the person and work of Jesus Christ. The Light of Jesus is to be shown brightly demonstrated to the world and as it is through us, God our Father will be glorified.
Reflect: Write down or discuss the ways that you can show the light of Christ in your home, church and community. How can you glow for the glory of the Lord? By yourself or as a family sing, “This Little Light of Mine.”
Rest: Rest your head, heart and home in the light of God. Enjoy an evening of rest.
Respond: Ask God to allow you to depend upon Him, be dedicated to His Word and will, and demonstrate the light of Christ in your life. Find a way to let your light shine!
